Black Power
When I first started ceramics I thought it was going to be hard and I didn’t know how to do many things. Now I love ceramics, I’ve made many different things but this one is special. When I started ceramics I didn't like getting messy but once you get used to getting messy you don't really care. The reason I love doing ceramics is that I have fun and get to create something inspiring.
This piece is an African American scrabble game. This Scrabble game means so much to me because you have to make the names of African American leaders whose legacy is legendary. I made this piece with many slabs and also a lot of stamps and paint. This piece means a lot to me because I am representing leaders whose life was treated differently because of the color of their skin. I also made 3 bowls along like the scrabble board because I wanted to make the scenery of a family game night. The three bowls will have candy in them to represent the scenery and the colors represent the colors on the board.I chose Martin Luther King Jr because of his voice and his voice has changed a lot with discrimination and segregation. I chose Rosa Parks because she got arrested for not getting up for a white man. I chose Harriet Tubman because she ran away from her home to get away from slavery. I chose Muhammad Ali because he had a slave name and that's why he changed his name. I chose Maya Angelou because she was a civil rights activist.I chose Dorothy Height because she was a civil rights and women's rights activist. Last but not least I chose Carter G. Woodson because he was a African American historian, author, journalist.
I never gave up on it and I feel like that shows how dedicated I am to this piece. This piece has inspired me to keep going in life and my ancestors would be very proud of me for making this piece. Ceramics has taught me to express my creativity and show how good of an artist I can be.
